Wow, my first blog post! I don’t know much about what I’m doing or how I am supposed to be doing it, so I’ll try to make my best possible “first blog impression.” I’ve searched through a few blogs today and I can see that most bloggers just write about random day-to-day experiences or issues. I like the idea of a blog, although I am not one who could be dedicated or interested enough to have my own blog and to post consistently. I’m more of the type of person to be out living my life, not writing about it. But I do find it interesting to read the blogs of others and sometimes relate to the stories and feelings of other writers whom I have never met before.
Blogs seem to allow the writer to write very casually on virtually any topic that may come to mind at the time. I like how far the range of these topics can stretch; it makes following a blog a lot more interesting than following a website of a writer who constantly elaborates on the same topics. Also, if I had to choose to follow one blog, I would rather follow one that was made up of a group of many different writers that shared a common interest, such as our EN 103-004 blog, so that I could read many different opinions and different styles of writing on one or more topics.
This blogging idea could get pretty tough for me. I think if I rambled about what was going on in my life at the time, I would bore my readers. I would try to throw in my opinions about certain events and issues that pertained to the world at the time, such as current political issues or new celebrity gossip. Speaking of celebrity gossip, I love the TMZ.com weblog! If I get bored, it is fun to read. This website seems to have celebrity gossip updates every minute.
About the whole “online identity” issue, I think blogs allow the writers to really be themselves, even more so than Facebook or MySpace. Less friends or family would look at a person’s blog site rather than their profile on Facebook or MySpace or a similar sight, so I think a writer would feel more freedom writing on a blog. Also, a blog is a lot more writing and a lot less pictures and applications (which Facebook seems to be currently overwhelmed with!) so a writer can go into greater detail about any available topic instead of just telling about him or herself. So through this writing freedom, one may act even different than they do in RL, where they may not feel comfortable discussing the topics or just telling about casual events like he can on his personal blog.
I think that this class blog will be interesting, especially since not many people in our class have ever participated or even seen a blog before. Hopefully we can all get accommodated with the whole idea and learn a little more about what is interesting to write about it and how we can entertain our readers or ourselves.
